The great pope / scholar Pope Benedict XVI gives interesting insight to the Christmas stories we all know in “Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives”.
Many consider B16 difficult to read but that is because so many of us are not willing to put in the effort to think when reading, at least that was my struggle when first starting to read his material. This is not written like some of his other theological work where it sounds like a transcript of his lectures.
B16 will go down as one of the greatest theologians in recent history. In fact, I believe he will be better known for what he contributed to the Church prior to becoming pope than after. In this book, he tackles many of the controversies associated with Christmas while explaining the Church’s teaching concerning Christmas in his excellent 201-level teaching style.
One this is for sure, if you do not know what exegeses is before starting the book, better look it up. He uses that term on almost every page.
Highly recommend this as an Advent read as you prepare for Christmas.
