Black FridayOne of the flaws of 21st century America is our desire to quickly move from one experience to another, without enjoying being in the moment.

Before the post-Halloween candy sales have cleared the shelves, the Christmas decorations are filling the stores. Many of us set up our Christmas trees at Thanksgiving so by the time the Christmas breakfast dishes are cleared, we are ready to take down the tree and put away the decorations.

But it does not need to be this way.

The world seems harried and the days seem to go faster because of us. We are the ones shorting our attention spans and trying to squeeze as much as we can into each moment without actually enjoying anything. Because this is true, we have the power to slow down our life and enjoy each moment.

We do not need to rush under the gate as it is opening–as seen in this picture–but at least wait until it gets above our heads.

Never Again Will There This Christmas

Stop for a moment and think about that headline. This Christmas — which starts in 12 days, assuming you are reading this on December 12 — has never happened before and it will never happen again. Are you ready to enjoy each moment of your Christmas celebration? It is so huge that there are 12 days to enjoy it!

I mentioned there are 12 days until Christmas. Today is the not the first day of Christmas as the world would have to believe. The counting of the 12 days of Christmas begins on Christmas day. We are still in Advent, and will be for 11 more days.

Here are some sobering thoughts:

  • For some, this is their last Christmas. Since we do not know who these people are, let’s enjoy this time with all we have the privilege of celebrating the incarnation of the Christ.
  • At Christmas 2014, there are going to be some who have not even yet been conceived. We need to gather all the stories and the traditions that go with Christmas celebrations to be able to pass them on to the next generation. This requires us to be present in each moment know learn the stories and the people well enough to make them alive for those to come.

This is an amazing time, so let us enjoy each moment!
